Carlo Dionisi-Vici, MD, paediatrician, is the head of the Clinical and Research Unit of Metabolic Diseases at the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù IRCCS, Rome, Italy; Chair of the SIMMESN (Società Italiana per lo studio delle Malattie Metaboliche Ereditarie e lo Screening Neonatale)

Obtained his medical degree and completed his residency in Paediatrics at University “La Sapienza” Rome, Italy. Post-doctoral research training programmes at Chemisches Zentrallabor, Inselspital, Bern University, Switzerland (1986-87) and at Department de Pediatrie Clinique de Genetique Medicale, Hospital Necker Enfants Malades, Paris, France (1993). 2011-16 Board Member of the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (SSIEM). From 2014 Chair of the “Società Italiana per lo studio delle Malattie Metaboliche e Screening Neonatale” (SIMMESN). Appointed as Professor of Inborn Errors of Metabolism, School of Pediatrics, University “La Sapienza”, University “Tor Vergata”, and , Catholic University “Sacro Cuore”, Rome. From 2009 he is the Head of the Unit of Metabolic Diseases, at the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù IRCCS, Rome, Italy. The main interest in clinical and scientific activity are inborn errors of metabolism (IEM), including defects of intermediary metabolism [organic acidurias, urea cycle defects, inherited hypoglycemias (hyperinsulinism, fatty acid oxidation defects, glycogen storage diseases), subcellular organelle disorders (mitochondrial, peroxisomal, lysosomal) and inherited defects of intracellular vesicular trafficking. He participates in multiple translational research projects, mainly focused on identifying new diseases, disease biomarkers, disease genes, novel therapeutic approaches and the development of guidelines for IEM.
Dr. Dionisi-Vici has been the chairman of the SSIEM symposium 2016 held in Rome, published over 200 articles in peer reviewed international journals, is co-editor of the textbook “Physician’s guide to the Diagnosis, Treatment and Follow-up of Inherited Metabolic Diseases” Eds. N. Blau, M. Duran, KM Gibson, C. Dionisi-Vici; Communicating Editor of Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease.
