Area of expertise and Healthcare Provider’s contribution to care for patients within the MetabERN Network

The Children’s Memorial Health Institute (CMHI) is a referral hospital for Poland where most of the liver diseases are treated centrally. Liver transplant program is monitored by the Ministry and the National Transplant Board in regard of efficacy, complications and access to donors. Almost all patients with biliary atresia are treated in our institution. We treat most of the patients with cholestatic liver disease, Wilson’s disease and many patients with autoimmune hepatitis. National Health care system monitors expenses in relationship to the procedures performed and diseases treated every year to decide about budgeting of our services. Our hospital is audited for standard operating procedures every year – where nursey, medical procedures etc. are checked at different levels within the National Center for Quality Control in Medicine.

The Department of Metabolic Diseases provides diagnosis of rare rare diseases and metabolic diseases and consultations for other  centers in Poland and from abroad.

We take monitor and care of  patients who receive orphan drugs within the so-called “drug programs” of patients with Gaucher, Pompe, Fabry, MPS I, II, IV, tyrosinemia, homocystinuria, hyperammonia, and cystinosis.

The team of metabolic diseases (8 doctors) monitors the management of patients; we also offer a multidisciplinary management, thanks to a multidisciplinary team of physicians and other health providers. We have the ability to provide emergency medical care for patients with metabolic decompensation and to provide biochemical and genetic diagnostics.

We conduct diagnostics of unknown cases based on molecular tests of Next Generation Sequencing, Whole Exome Sequencing and biochemical tests.
