Esmeralda Martins, MD,PhD, paediatrician is the Head of Metabolic Diseases Unit at Centro Hospitalar do Porto and Auxiliary Professor of Pediatrics at the Medicine Master Degree course at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences - University of Porto.

Prof Esmeralda Martins earned her medical degree at Coimbra University. She completed her residency in Paediatrics at the Maria Pia Children Hospital, Porto, with special training in Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) in Paris at Hôpital Necker Enfant Malade, with Professor Jean Marie Saudubray. She earned her doctorate at the University of Porto, under the theme of Inborn Errors of Metabolism.
Prof Martins has extensive expertise as a clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric rare disorders, metabolic diseases in particular, and that is her main focus as a Researcher in the Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research Unit (UMIB) at Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences – University of Porto.
She is an active member of the consultive board for the Portuguese Health Ministery in the field of paediatrics, with a special focus in IEM diagnosis and treatment guidelines.
She is especially interested in developing regional health network approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic inherited diseases.
Prof Esmeralda Martins published about 60 international peer-reviewed clinical and scientific papers, book chapters and reviews.
