This session is scheduled for March 5th at 16:00 CET and focuses on presenting the International Recommendations on the evaluation and management of persistent hypoglycemia in neonates, infants, and children. As part of a national inter-ERN collaboration, this webinar will also be aimed primarily at the Italian MetabERN and Endo-ERN centers. The session will be held in Italian, but the slides will be written in English.
Persistent hypoglycemia in early life represents a significant clinical challenge due to its heterogeneous etiologies, the difficulty of recognition – particularly in neonates and young infants – and the risk of severe and permanent neurological injury if diagnosis and treatment are delayed.
While guidance is available for the management of transient hypoglycemia in the immediate postnatal period, standardized recommendations for persistent and recurrent hypoglycemia have historically been limited. To address this unmet need, multidisciplinary panel of experts developed evidence-based and clinically applicable recommendations. These recommendations aim to assist clinicians in distinguishing among the different etiologies of hypoglycemia, identifying patients who require further investigation, and implementing timely diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
During this session, the physiopathology, the differential diagnosis, and key concepts about treatment will be presented and discussed. Emphasis will be placed on early recognition and etiology-based management, as well as on the practical implications for daily clinical practice. The final part of the session will also address the Italian landscape through the data of the SIMMESN / SIEDP survey.
