Elevated ammonia levels in the blood may result from various inborn errors of metabolism and can cause neurological impairment or mortality. This represents a time-sensitive medical situation, and prompt testing, diagnosis and management are essential to prevent life threatening events.
On September 18 at 17.00 CEST, MetabERN is hosting a webinar titled “Think Ammonia! Test and Diagnosis of Hyperammonaemia in time” in collaboration with Metabolic Support UK patient organisation, aiming to highlight the impact of hyperammonaemia for at-risk communities, and provide expert guidance on diagnosis, testing, and treatment. This webinar is designed for healthcare professionals involved in the management of Inherited Metabolic Disorders, as well as those interested in expanding their knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of hyperammonaemia. The program also welcomes patient representatives.
The webinar features speaker presentations followed by a Q&A session. Participants will gain valuable tools and insights to identify and manage this condition, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and preventing serious long-term complications or mortality.
The presentation schedule includes Prof. François Eyskens, MetabERN Education and Training Coordinator at the University Hospital of Antwerp, Belgium, providing an introduction to hyperammonaemia associated with inherited metabolic disorders. Dr. Dries Dobbelaere, Coordinator of the MetabERN centre at the University Hospital of Lille, France, will present on the early and late neonatal clinical manifestations of hyperammonaemia. Dr. Gavin Mercer-Smith, Consultant Chemical Pathologist at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, UK, will discuss the stability and causes of increased ammonia levels in blood samples from patients with hyperammonaemia. Finally, Jonathan Gibson, Campaign and Communications Lead at Metabolic Support UK, will offer insights from the Think Ammonia campaign, launched by Metabolic Support UK in March 2024, which provides practical resources and tailored guidance for both healthcare professionals and the general public.
Don’t miss the chance to learn about hyperammonaemia and the importance of early testing for effective diagnosis and management. The webinar is structured to foster meaningful discussion and provide actionable recommendations, contributing to a collective effort to raise awareness and enhance best practices within the metabolic community.
