Rare disease, chronic pain and mental health: a patient’s story

What happens when your body is under siege, but the world can’t see the battle?
Living with Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy with Lactic Acidosis and Stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome means navigating a rare, often invisible disease that reshapes every aspect of life.

This Global Mental Health Day (October 10), we’re honored to share a patient’s story in a new video, the final piece of a triptych exploring the intersection of chronic illness, pain, and mental well-being. In a previous testimonial, the patient spoke candidly about living with chronic pain, and Dr. Guy Hans, a pain specialist, helped us understand the crucial differences between acute and chronic pain. Now, the patient invites us into her world, revealing how MELAS has impacted her mind, her relationships, and her sense of self.

Why this story matters

MELAS is a rare mitochondrial disorder that affects energy production in cells, leading to a cascade of neurological and physical symptoms. For the patient, this means coping with unpredictable episodes, and a constant struggle to be believed—because so much of her suffering is invisible.

In her video, the patient opens up about:

  • The emotional toll of an invisible illness: How do you explain to others what you’re going through when they can’t see it?
  • Social isolation and stigma: The loneliness of canceling plans, being misunderstood, or facing skepticism.

Her story is a testament to the strength it takes to live with a rare disease—and a call to action for greater empathy and understanding.
