Dr de las Heras received his M.D. from the University of Navarra, and obtained the PhD (European Doctorate) in medicine at the University of the Basque Country.

He is the coordinator of the Hereditary Metabolic Diseases Unit at Cruces University Hospital in Bilbao (Spain), a nationwide reference center (CSUR – Reference Centers, Services, and Units of the Spanish National Health System) in Hereditary Metabolic Diseases.

Experienced with all kinds of hereditary metabolic disorders, he is especially focused on the study and treatment of hereditary fructose intolerance, lysosomal acid lipase deficiency and Pompe disease.

In the academic field, he is professor of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Basque Country.

Regarding his research activity, he is the coordinator of the Congenital Metabolic Disorders Research Group at the Biocruces Bizkaia Health Research Institute, a clinical group affiliated with CIBER-ER.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Research Methodology in Health Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and completed a 15-month research stay at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (USA).

Dr. de las Heras is the author of 44 indexed scientific articles and 18 book chapters in the field of Inborn Errors of Metabolism. He serves as Principal Investigator in several competitive national and European studies, as well as in various clinical trials and international rare disease registries.
