First Italian National Meeting on Rare Inherited Metabolic Diseases in Adults
We are glad to announce the First Italian National Meeting on Rare Inherited Metabolic Diseases in Adults, which will be held on 17 September 2022 at the Astoria Hotel Italia in Udine and aimed to discuss rare metabolic diseases in adulthood.
Rare inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs), which in the past were thought to be exclusively of paediatric competence, are increasingly becoming a topic of interest in adult medicine. Adult patients suffering from IMDs are increasing exponentially, both due to a higher survival rate from childhood to adulthood and due to a greater diagnostic capacity of the ‘mild’ and ‘late-onset’ forms. Clinical care of adults with IMDs has emerged as a new and challenging reality that implies the need for adequate training of healthcare professionals dedicated to adult patients.
In an effort to raise awareness on rare metabolic diseases in adulthood, MetabERN, in collaboration with the Italian Society for the study of Hereditary Metabolic Diseases and Newborn Screening (SIMMESN) and the University Hospital of Udine (ASUFC), has organised this first Italian national meeting to address issues such as the organisation of the transition from childhood to adulthood, the management of the peculiarities of adult patients such as a possible pregnancy or possible complications related to ageing.
