ERICA ERN Research Conference hosted by MetabERN
The ERICA ERN Research Conference (11th to 13th December 2024) concluded in Udine a few days ago. Over three days, more than 178 participants from all the 24 European Reference Networks, along with representatives from the European Commission, pharmaceutical companies, and regulatory agencies, gathered to discuss topics which will be crucial for the future of ERNs and rare diseases research.
11th December – Conference Opening
The conference kicked off with warm welcomes from Maurizio Scarpa (MetabERN Coordinator) and David Turello (Chief Medical Director of Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Friuli Centrale – ASUFC), who emphasized how the ERNs have a vital role in advancing rare disease research, being also capable of leading to tangible outcomes for patients living with a rare disorder.
Alberto Pereira (ERICA Coordinator) showcased the project’s significant achievements and outlined the upcoming agenda for the meeting.
Hélène Le Borgne, from the European Commission, introduced the attendees to the expected ERICA Legacy, explaining how it will impact and have a positive effect on the ERNs for the years to come.
The remaining part of the afternoon was primarily focused on the Key Achievements obtained by ERICA, where each of the six Work Packages had the opportunity to showcase their progress.
Lastly, the poster session began with three-minute pitches delivered by 9 selected researches, each offering a snapshot of their research activities and outcomes.
12th December – ERN Research, innovative therapies and clinical trials
The second day of the meeting delved deeply into the heart of ERN research activities, with insightful sessions focused on diagnostic and outcome research, innovative therapies, and clinical trials. A diverse range of experts shared their knowledge, addressing unsolved rare disease cases, exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence in rare diseases, and discussing strategies to accelerate clinical trials while navigating associated challenges.
The last session of the day (Clinical Trial & Supporting Networks) culminated in a panel discussion exploring the challenges and needs within the clinical trial landscape, fostering dialogue between key stakeholders. This session underscored the importance of integrating robust networks and novel approaches to advance clinical trial methodologies and outcomes for rare diseases.
Following a full day of engaging talks, participants could enjoy a guided tour of the hosting city of Udine. The day concluded with an unforgettable dinner near Udine’s castle, placed on the highest point of the city. A Poster Award Ceremony took place during dinner, celebrating those who excelled in their poster presentations.
13th December – Future of the ERN research
The last day of the meeting focused on the future of ERN research, highlighting the importance of the continuation of ERN research cooperation in the next years, aligning to project such as ERDERA, Jardin and Together4RD. Although the ERICA project has reached its final stage, its legacy will live on through dedicated tasks within the ERDERA Project (WP25.4). This will ensure the continued relevance and importance of ERNs for rare disease patients.
