Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) | New Videos

The Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) was launched by the European Commission (Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety – DG SANTE) on November 20th 2017, as a web-based application aimed at supporting the European Reference Networks (ERNs) in improving the diagnosis and treatment of rare or low prevalence complex diseases across national borders of EU Member States.

By providing tools for virtual consultations, the CPMS enables health professionals to enrol patients and share clinical information with other experts within and across ERNs, to carry out collaborative diagnosis and treatment in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR – 2016/679).

The system is also important for future clinical research, as, if the patients consent to it, the data can be entered in registries, and patients can be contacted for clinical trials.

Reasons to Love the CPMS:

The Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) is a telemedicine platform that was provided by the European Commission in 2017 to the health care professionals who are part of the European Reference Networks (ERNs). MetabERN – the ERN for Hereditary Metabolic Disorders – produced this video to show how the CPMS works, and explain how it can help in the remote diagnosis and care of rare or low prevalence diseases. MetabERN and the General Data Protection Regulation:

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect in 2018 in the European Union to regulate the sharing of personal information. The GDPR has many applications in the health care sector.

MetabERN – the European Reference Network for Hereditary Metabolic Disorders – produced this video to illustrate how the GDPR can affect the remote diagnosis and treatment of rare or low prevalence diseases, and state how the telemedicine platform Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) helps the health care providers of the European Reference Networks to comply with the GDPR by safely and securely sharing anonymised patient data. Watch the video here.

Patients’ Consent and Other Doctors’ Responsibilities in the CPMS:

According to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), patients need to provide written consent for their anonymised information to be shared, and their medical cases to be discussed by their doctors with other health care providers.

MetabERN – the European Reference Network for Hereditary Metabolic Disorders – produced this video to describe the data protection responsibilities that health care providers have towards their patients when using the telemedicine platform Clinical Patient Management System (CPMS) for remote diagnosis and treatment of rare or low prevalence diseases.
