Brain Metabolism Dialogues 27 April

Brain Metabolism Dialogues webinar: Mechanisms of lipid transport in cells

Eukaryotic cells produce more than 1,000 different lipid species that help regulate the properties of organelle membranes, control signalling, and store energy. However, studying the biological functions of individual lipids has been challenging due to a lack of adequate methods for visualising their intracellular localisation, transport between organelles, and interactions with proteins.

This Brain Metabolism Dialogues webinar will explore the complex mechanisms of lipid transport in cells and the keynote speaker will be Dr. Nadler, Senior Research Group Leader at Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany. The session is scheduled for 27 April at 17:00 CEST.

Dr. Nadler will present recent advances in lipid cell biology enabled by minimally modified lipid probes. This approach allowed to measure transport rates for individual lipids in cellular assays and to discover that non-vesicular lipid transport is the primary mechanism that the cell uses to establish the distinct lipid compositions of organelle membranes.

The session will also showcase a workflow for mapping lipid–protein interactions and uncovering lipid function during intracellular trafficking. Key discoveries include the role of phosphatidylethanolamine in positioning membrane protein complexes within highly curved membranes, as well as new insights into the molecular basis of ether lipid deficiencies and their links to disease. This session highlights how chemical biology is transforming lipid research and opening new avenues in understanding fundamental cell processes and human physiology.

Deadline for registration: 27 April – 13:00 CEST.

The “Brain Metabolism Dialogues” webinar series is a joint initiative of the European Reference Network on Hereditary Metabolic Disorders (MetabERN) and the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (SSIEM).
