Mater Dei Hospital is the only, state-run, acute general teaching hospital in Malta. It offers a full range of hospital services, both inpatient and outpatient, including an extensive range of specialist services.

The hospital aims to create a centre of excellence in the provision of effective and efficient, acute patient centred quality care. It also aims to achieve high levels of patient and staff satisfaction and enhance teaching, research and innovation.

  • Teaching Hospital: Mater Dei Hospital is a teaching hospital providing training for medical, nursing, and allied professions. Patients may be asked to allow students to observe and/or participate in the delivery of care with a health professional. Students are closely supervised, and treatment plans are only devised by qualified professionals.
  • Centre of Excellence: the Department for Cardiology and the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology within Mater Dei Hospital are formally recognised as Centres of Excellence.
  • Affiliation: Mater Dei Hospital is a National Coordination Hub, affiliated to 24 European Reference Networks for Rare Diseases.
